Saint Joseph's 2012 Recruiting Targets: Guards and Wings

Over the past few months, I have profiled a number of players in the class of 2012 that have either interest or offers from Saint Joseph's. In an effort to compile names, I have listed below names of interest for Hawk fans. Of course, names will be added to this as the spring AAU season continues. As much as possible, I provided links to other articles, either by me or by other recruiting sites, next to each name.

Today we will look at guards and wings, then tomorrow take a look at the big men.

Guards and Wings:

Dallas Anglin: 6'2 guard from Seton Hall Prep in New Jersey. Anglin recently took an unofficial visit to SJU and holds an offer from the Hawks. An article on that visit from Philahoops.com can be found here.

Lionel Greene: 6'2 guard from City College in Maryland. According to Alex Kline's Twitter, Greene picked up offers from Seton Hall, George Mason, and Saint Joseph's this past week. Greene is an athletic combo guard from Baltimore.

Jodan Price: 6'7 shooting guard from Detroit Country Day (MI). Jodan is a shooting guard out of Detroit that has recently picked up interest from both Saint Joseph's and Temple. According to Ben Weixlmann of HeardThisBlog (here), Price has recently been visited by SJU and Temple assistants, and hopes to visit both Philly schools in June.

Terry Rozier: 5'11 point guard from Shaker Heights High School in Ohio. Rozier has had himself a terrific spring running with All Ohio Red. As a result, he is attracting some serious attention. Saint Joseph's is one of the schools expressing interest. Exactly how much interest on either end isn't known at the moment, at least not to me. Saint Joseph's is a school that Rozier is listing at the moment though. An interview with Rozier, where he mentions SJU, can be found here.

Sheldon Jeter: 6'6 wing guard from Beaver Falls High school in Pittsburgh. Jeter picked up an offer from the Hawks back in February. An article that I did after he picked up his offers from SJU, Temple, and Penn State can be found here.

Michael Ramey: 6'4 shooting guard from Southport High School in Indianapolis. In an interview with Kyle Neddenriep of the Indy Star (here), Ramey listed Ball State, Fordham, and Saint Joseph's as his three favorite schools. He also has recent interest from Nebraska, Clemson, Minnesota, Georgia Tech and others. Ramey shot 52 percent from 3-point range during his junior campaign.

Isaiah Miles: 6'7 small forward from Glenelg Country School just outside of Baltimore. I could have included Isaiah in tomorrow's write-up, but his strengths as a shooter led me to include him here. Isaiah is a player that is receiving a significant amount of attention from the Hawks' coaching staff at the moment. I spoke with one of his high school coaches, Geoff Reed, recently and that article can be found here.

Saint Anthony, Seton Hall Prep Are Champs

The RAC on Rutgers' campus was loud and packed last night. There were 60 Minutes film crews in the house and television broadcast teams sitting court-side. However, none of the activity at the RAC had anything to do with the Scarlet Knights. The North Jersey Non-Public A and B championship games were the draw, selling out the stadium. I was unable to attend the games, but there was plenty of media on hand to give insight and perspective on the night's events.

The first game of the evening, the North Jersey Non-Public A championship game, pitted Seton Hall Prep against Saint Peter's Prep. Coach Mike Kelly's Saint Peter's Prep team forced overtime, but eventually fell 55-47. All season long, guards Sterling Gibbs and Dallas Anglin have been instrumental in Seton Hall Prep's success. The song remained the same last night, with Gibbs scoring 23, including 10 free throws in overtime. Junior guard Dallas Anglin, who is being recruited by Saint Joseph's, had 17 points for SHP, including four 3-pointers. Seton Hall Prep will now take on Saint Augustine Prep on Saturday in Toms River. Mike Moretti's article from NJ.com is linked here.

While the first game of the night between Seton Hall Prep and Saint Peter's Prep was a good one, the sell-out crowd on hand was mostly there for the evening's second game. The game featured the two top teams, not only in New Jersey, but in America. Saint Patrick's came into last night's game considered the number one team in America, and Bob Hurley's Saint Anthony team was considered next in line. In the North Jersey Non-Public B championship game, it was Hurley's Friars that walked off the court 62-45 winners. While the Friars won by 17, the game was much closer than the final score indicates. Saint Pat's actually held a 5-point halftime lead and a 1-point lead going into the fourth quarter. The Friars outscored the Celtics 23-5 in the final frame though. Saint Anthony will also play again on Saturday in Toms River, taking on Cardinal McCarrick for the state crown. Mike Kinney's article on the Saint Anthony game can be found here. That link also contains video clips from the game.

Weekend Rundown

Over the past two days, a number of noteworthy high school games were played in the area. A rundown on those games, a look forward, and a few recruiting notes are below.

On the recruiting front, Roman Catholic senior big Junior Fortunat attended the Seton Hall-Marquette game last night. Junior has seen a number of schools jump into his recruitment since becoming NCAA eligible last week, which I reported on here.

According to Alex Kline's Twitter, Princeton Day School (NJ) sophomore Davon Reed was in attendance at yesterday's Temple-La Salle game. Both schools have already offered the 6'4 guard. In addition to those schools, Saint Joseph's, VCU, Rutgers, and West Virginia have also extended scholarship offers Davon's way.

Temple also hosted another significant recruit this weekend, as Westtown (PA) junior center Daniel Ochefu took an unofficial visit to campus on Friday with his parents. An article from Philly.com on his visit is linked here. His final four schools are Temple, Villanova, Georgetown, and Texas.

In New Jersey playoff action yesterday, Teaneck advanced with a 20-point win over Sparta. Chris Jones, a junior wing who has interest from the Hawks, had 11 points in the win, while sophomore guard Joel Hernandez dropped 23. An article on the game can be found here.

On Friday night, another junior guard with SJU interest helped his team advance. Seton Hall Prep junior guard Dallas Anglin had a game-high 28 points to guide his team past Paramus Catholic. Anglin had interest from the Hawks, Boston University, George Washington, Rice, and many others. He has been on a tear during this playoff run, and more schools are bound to take notice.

In Philadelphia, Friday night was full of high school hoops as well. The night's premier matchup was the District 1 Class AAAA title game between Chester and Council Rock North. Maurice Nelson led the way for Chester, scoring 22 points. Chester had four double-digit scorers, and easily dispatched of Council Rock North, 66-43. RIck O'Brien's article from the Inquirer can be found here.

Philadelphia's District 12 Class AAA championship game took place Friday night at Archbishop Ryan, and featured Philadelphia Catholic League champs Neumann-Goretti and Philadelphia Electrical and Technology. Neumann took a 33-23 lead into the half, eventually winning 62-54. Two stars for Neumann were sophomore Johnny Davis, who tallied 18 points and 18 rebounds, and sophomore Derrick Stewart who had 15. PET got 19 points from Hakeem Baxter, and 9 each from Devante Chance and Carrington Ward.

St. Anthony, St. Pat's, St. Peter's, and SHP Win as Coaches Look On

Some of the top high school talent in the state assembled yesterday afternoon at Kean University in North Jersey for the Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children Basketball Festival.

Two top-20 teams battled, with Seton Hall Prep getting the best of Hudson Catholic, 63-53. Seton Hall Prep improved to 6-2 with the win. Junior guard Dallas Anglin, a Saint Joseph's recruiting target, had 4 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 blocks in the winning effort.

Saint Anthony blew out Saint Joseph's of Montvale 76-44 behind a well-balanced effort. A player that I watched at the Eddie Griffin Challenge, junior forward Jerome Frink, put together another solid performance for the Friars, scoring 8, grabbing 9 rebounds, and tallying 2 blocks and 2 steals. Unsigned senior Lucious Jones paced Saint Anthony with 17 points and 7 rebounds.

Saint Peter's Prep also won in convincing fashion, beating Trenton Catholic 63-40. Despite losing Ronald Roberts to college (Saint Joseph's), and Myles Davis and Dallas Anglin to transfers, Saint Peter's Prep continues to roll along. Senior guard Stephon Whyatt led the way for Saint Peter's, hitting 3 3's en route to his team-leading 21 points.

Saint Patrick's improved to 7-0, defeating rival Saint Benedict's 73-65. Kentucky-bound senior Michael Gilchrist showed once again why he is one of the most highly-regarded high school prospects in the country, pouring in 25 points and collecting 14 rebounds.

This talent attracted quite a few college coaches, including SJU's head coach Phil Martelli. Martelli was likely there to see junior guard Dallas Anglin, as well as a number of other players in the sophomore and junior classes. Joining Martelli in attendance was Rutgers' Mike Rice, Georgetown's John Thompson III, and Seton Hall's Kevin Willard.

All stats from the game are from the NJ.com article linked here.

The list of coaches is from the Zagsblog article linked here.

Hawks Showing Interest in Another Jersey Guard

Year in and year out, New Jersey produces some of the top basketball talent in the country. Yesterday, I was able to catch Saint Patrick's pound a good Trenton Catholic team. The depth, talent, and coaching at Saint Pat's is about as good as it gets. Next year, two of Saint Patrick's players will be moving on to the college level, with Michael Gilchrist going to Kentucky and Derrick Gordon going to Western Kentucky. A bit further south in the state, Life Center Academy has two guards headed to major programs, with John Johnson headed to Pitt and LaQuinton Ross going to Ohio State. Saint Anthony senior guard Myles Mack is going to Rutgers. The list goes on and on. The talent isn't limited to the senior class either. Both the sophomore and junior classes in the Garden State are loaded as well.

Over the years, the Hawks have had success in the state of New Jersey, landing Dwayne Lee and Ahmad Nivins from Saint Anthony's. In the current sophomore class on Hawk Hill, both Carl Baptiste and Justin Crosgile are from New Jersey. Current freshman forward Ronald Roberts played his high school ball at Jersey City's Saint Peter's Prep.

It seems as if the Hawks are looking into their neighboring state in the current high school junior class as well. The Hawks have apparently already offered 6'1 Seton Hall Prep guard Dallas Anglin. Another North Jersey guard with interest from the Hawks is Newark Eastside's Tariq Carey. The newest name is that of 6'3 Teaneck junior Chris Jones. In the video interview linked below with Alex Kline of TheRecruitScoop, Jones claims no offers, but mentions Saint Joseph's as one of the schools involved in his recruitment. Along with SJU, he mentions Penn, Penn State, Rider, and Marist.

Jones had 20 points last night to lead his Teaneck team past Sterling Gibbs, Dallas Anglin and Seton Hall Prep. Anglin had 9 points for Seton Hall Prep in their 60-45 loss.

12/21 Odds and Ends

Some quick hitters before the day starts:

The Hawks are up in Boston tonight to take on Boston University at 7 pm tonight. The 3-7 Hawks are looking to snap a 5-game losing streak in their first game after finals.

In an interview here with TheRecruitScoop's Alex Kline, Dallas Anglin lists Saint Joseph's as one of the schools he is considering. Anglin, a 6'2 guard from Seton Hall Prep (NJ) is off to a very strong start to the season. Worth noting is that Anglin was teammates with current SJU freshman Ronald Roberts at Saint Peter's Prep.

Friends' Central had a big win last night at Philadelphia University over Imhotep Charter. Friends' Central got another solid outing out of senior guard Devin Coleman, who had, according to Philly.com, 16 points and 9 rebounds. Amile Jefferson led the way with 17 points and 7 boards.

On Sunday, Alex Kline reported that the Hawks had offered Princeton Day School sophomore Davon Reed over the weekend. Reed isn't the only player that Hawk head coach Phil Martelli watched over the weekend. He was also in attendance as Red Land (PA) beat Father Judge. An article linked here mentions that Martelli watched on as Mike Zangari had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Red Land. Zangari is a 6'9 junior who has been on the radar of the SJU coaching staff for quite some time.

Anglin Taking Visits; Nickseron to Charlotte

6'2 junior guard Dallas Anglin from New Jersey's Seton Hall Prep, took an unofficial visit to Boston University on Friday, according to Alex Kline ( here) . Anglin, who I came away from the Eddie Griffin Challenge two weeks ago very impressed with, has two more visits scheduled for the near future. He has planned unofficial visits to two A10 schools, Richmond and Saint Joseph's.

Staying in the A10, Charlotte picked up a significant recruit Saturday when they got a verbal commitment from 6'6 senior wing E. Victor Nickerson. Nickerson chose Charlotte over DePaul, Colorado, Georgia Southern, and Wichita State. He is ranked as the 133rd best player in the 2011 class according to Rivals.com.

Eddie Griffin Challenge- New Jersey Juniors

As promised, over the next couple of days, I will break down some of what I saw Sunday at Trenton Catholic during the Eddie Griffin Challenge. Yesterday, I posted an article about Seton Hall Prep's Dallas Anglin, who currently holds an offer from Saint Joseph's. Today, we will look at the individual games of a number of other New Jersey juniors. Tomorrow, we will look at the PA side, and then on Friday we will look at the sophomore game.

Jersey City's Saint Anthony High School has a reputation as one of the best high school basketball programs in the country, and for good reason. Coach Bob Hurley is one of the best there is at any level. The New Jersey juniors team featured three Saint Anthony players: Kyle Anderson, Jerome Frink, and Rashad Andrews. I watched those three, Dallas Anglin, Tariq Carey, and Brandon Taylor most closely, and their write-ups are below.

Kyle Anderson- Anderson, who attended Paterson Catholic prior to it's closing at the end of last year, is a newcomer this season to Saint Anthony. He will only bring one of the most well-rounded games in the country to Coach Hurley. Standing 6'8, Anderson is ranked the number 1 point guard in the country by Rivals.com. Yes, point guard. While he may not play strictly the point in college, and eventually in the NBA, Anderson possesses a great feel for the game and great ball-handling for a player his size. He is a triple-double threat every time out there, and he was close to one on Sunday. Anderson is able to shoot over smaller perimeter defenders, post up other guards, and create for his teammates with his tremendous court awareness. If there is one word to describe Anderson's game, it is smooth. Nothing ever looks forced. Nothing ever looks awkward. The one knock on Anderson by scouts is his lack of great foot-speed. While not the most fleet-footed player on the court, he more than makes up for his lack of explosive foot-speed with his size, length, and ball-handling. One particular play in the second half of Sunday's game saw Anderson grab an offensive rebound under the basket, with his back to the basket. Knowing that another NJ junior was behind him on the other side of the basket, Anderson calmly threw the ball backwards, over his head, to his teammate. He is a unique talent.

Dallas Anglin -see yesterday's article here .

Jerome Frink (pictured above)- Frink, a 6'5 forward from Hurley's Saint Anthony program, was one of the most enjoyable players to watch on Sunday. While not the biggest player on the court or necessarily the most talented, Frink has a blue-collar approach to the game that makes him extremely likable. Right now, Frink is probably considered an undersized power forward if you need to put a label on him. Although on the smaller side for a power forward, Frink has a very wide build with broad shoulders, making him difficult to move around the hoop. He finished the game with 17 points and roughly 7 or 8 rebounds. Most of his points came on dunks, putbacks, or free throws. Down the stretch, when New Jersey made their comeback, Frink was money from the free-throw line. He would pull down offensive board after offensive board, getting fouled going back up. Jerome also had one of the highlight-reel plays of the day. On a fast break, Frink crossed his man over and then took off from deeper than he should have. His dunk shook the rim and backboard violently, causing the gym to explode in hoots and hollers. I have no idea if Frink is being looked at by the Hawks, or what schools are looking at him. He is a player that I thoroughly enjoyed watching Sunday and a player to keep an eye on, especially under the coaching of Bob Hurley. If Frink either grows or develops a bit more of a perimeter game over the next two years, he could be a very good college player.

Brandon Taylor- Taylor was the lone player in the junior game from Trenton Catholic. The 6'6 forward had a decent game for the New Jersey team. He was able to hit a shot from 3 and score twice around the basket. Although skilled, Taylor did not display the killer instinct or tenacity of Frink or Amile Jefferson on the Pennsylvania side.

Rashad Andrews- Another Saint Anthony player, the 6'4 wing had himself a decent afternoon. He scored 5 points for Jersey. Andrews projects as either a 2 guard or small forward down the line. He is long and athletic, and appeared to be an above-average defender. The physical tools are there, and with Hurley's coaching, Andrews could develop into a solid college prospect.

Tariq Carey- I was interested in seeing Carey play, since he is a name I have heard quite a bit of over the past year. Carey, a 6'2 guard from Newark, has garnered a decent amount of Big East interest over the past year, and seems to have his eyes set on a conference like the Big East or ACC. In my opinion, both Carey and Dallas Anglin were the best New Jersey guards Sunday after Kyle Anderson. Carey is very quick and strong with the ball. Due to his size, colleges probably want to see him develop into more of a pure point guard to play at the Big East or ACC level. His perimeter shot struggled a bit in this game, but he still managed to score 8 points. I can see why high-majors are keeping an eye on Carey.

Check back tomorrow for the PA side.

Dallas Anglin with SJU Offer

On Sunday afternoon, at the Eddie Griffin Challenge, one of the players that stood out to me was Seton Hall Prep junior guard Dallas Anglin. It turns out that the Saint Joseph's coaching staff has had an eye on the 6'2 guard as well. According to Alex Kline's Twitter ( here ) Anglin currently holds offers from Saint Joseph's, Boston, Rice, and George Washington. After watching Anglin on Sunday, I will be shocked if that list doesn't expand, and quickly, this season.

Anglin played last season at Saint Peter's Prep. In fact, he was listed in the roster on Sunday as attending at Saint Peter's. During the summer, he transferred into Seton Hall Prep. From one prep to another. There is a connection there between Anglin and Saint Joseph's, and that connection is current SJU freshman Ronald Roberts. Roberts and Anglin were teammates last year at Saint Peter's Prep.

On Sunday, Anglin poured in 12 points for the New Jersey juniors, and threw in a couple steals, a couple assists, and a rebound. Anglin is considered a combo guard, but demonstrated on Sunday some solid point guard abilities. Playing alongside a number of talented guards, including superstar-in-the-making Kyle Anderson, Anglin showed that he has a bright future as well. Anglin electrified the crowd on at least three separate occasions with high-flying dunks. Although listed at 6'2, Anglin showed that he likes to play well above the rim, and is more than capable of doing so. It was at the rim, and driving to the rim, that Anglin impressed the most. With a solid handle and good court vision, Anglin has a bright future ahead of him. He is just one name from Sunday worth mentioning. Check back tomorrow for more.
